INTERCEPTOR FIREWALL PROTECTION SETUP

SafetySend "Interceptor" HIPAA Compliant Technology platform

Advanced Spam, Virus, Spyware and Intrusion Protection

The SafetySend "Interceptor" is a HIPAA and GLBA compliant multi-layer security solution that  combines advanced firewall technology with sophisticated content filters to ensure the maximum protection for your sensitive data and PHI.   The scalable configuration options at both the enterprise and individual level provide healthcare organizations, government entities, corporations, small businesses and even sole practitioners the ease-of-use they want and the comprehensive security they need.

Interceptor setup is available in two modes: normal and advanced. Advanced mode requires custom configuration of our firewall settings to accommodate your specific needs.  Please contact support for more information: support@safetysend.com

The Interceptor filter setup dialog allows you to configure two aspects of Interceptor filters:

  • A admin and user function that controls to what messages the filter is applied and what is done with a mail, once it is flagged as spam.  The settings in this part are stored in the OPTIONS section of the user interface.
  • Configuration of Interceptor itself. The settings in this part are stored in the ADMIN CONTROL PANEL in the Interceptor rule set located here: https://admin.safetysend.com.

How the "Interceptor" Works

Interceptor is a well-known firewall and malware detection engine. It uses the following techniques to identify spam:

  • The mail headers are scanned for some small inconsistencies that can give away forgeries: A mail date in the past or in the future, forged message IDs, and the like.
  • The mail body is scanned for typical spam mail content, such as spam keywords, capitalized letters, or invitations to buy or click something.
  • Queries to blacklist servers are used, e.g. to see if a mail has been submitted from a known open mail relay.
  • Probability analysis of mails (Bayes filtering). Spam mails can be trained, so that similar mails are more likely to be identified as spam in the future.
  • Analysis of the URLs a mail refers to: Spammers want you to click on hyperlinks referring to their sites, so a lookup in a database of known spam-advertised sites has proven to be highly effective in identifying spam mails.

The result of all these tests is added up to form a spam score. A message is considered spam if the score exceeds a configurable threshold. You can modify the aggressiveness of the spam checker by modifying this threshold: an aggressive setting with a low threshold will find more spam mails, at a higher risk of legitimate mails falsely identified as spam (false positives).

In the typical configuration, the subject of mail identified as spam is modified to flag it as spam mail and the message is quarantined within the Interceptor wrapper to prevent accidental infection with dialers, spyware, trojans, or viruses by viewing HTML content.

At this time the SafetySend Message Servers handle that message based on your security and compliance policy rules managed in the Security Compliance Officer Admin Console..  You can have spam mails deleted or move spam mails to the "FLAGGED" folder or leave the decision what to do with spam mails to your users.

If you are not sure how you want this technology configured you can leave the global settings already established by our network administrators until you determine a specific function you would like to modify.  *Recommended Setting

User and Admin Options

Users can configure their settings to block individual email addresses, raise or lower their "FLAGGED" threshold and many other functions to customize the performance based on their individual preference and to make our system compatible with your preferred email client or device.   Interceptor is an excellent compliment to Microsoft Outlook Lotus Notes, Blackberry, iPhone and other mobile mail clients.

Required "Spam" Score

Interceptor tests each incoming mail against its spam and malware detection rules. Each matching rule adds a predefined score to the overall spam score.

Our system calculates the threshold score required for a mail to be considered spam. Our default setting is moderately aggressive with a few false positives which will be directed into your FLAGGED folder below your inbox.  We could increase this value to reduce the probability of false positives or you can individually "whitelist" users until the system manages all your mail efficiently.

The Interceptor gets more intelligent the longer you use it and improves employee productivity and reduces frustration and time consumed by spam messages.   Interceptor also greatly increases risk management by rejecting most fraudulent and forged emails seeming to come from legitimate entities.

What is the **FLAGGED** Subject Tag?

We add the text **FLAGGED*  to the subject of mails considered spam. The message will contain the ruleset we utilized to flag that message so you may communicate to users the reasons a message may be FLAGGED.  This assists all users of the system (Local and Non-Local) in keeping messages flowing quickly and safety throughout the internet.   Often our system catches potential security threats before their local anti-virus recognizes the malware.  SafetySend is well-known for being ahead of the curve on security, fail-over technology, redundancy and reliability.

Relay Blacklists - Skipping RBL Checks

RBL means "Relay Black List".  This is the dreaded "my emails are being rejected" message due to a system being compromised and its IP address reporting to watchdog agencies who aggregate this information and assist us in protecting you..   All mail systems have been compromised in some way by someone.  At one point, Google as the biggest email spammer in history due to a hole in it's technology platform.  We allow the ability to disable the use of RBLs (open relay blocking lists) in Interceptor.

The purpose of our RBL checking is to automatically determine whether the message processes comes from the server in the message header.  This technology provides a significant layer of security to our users.

Managing The Interceptor Security Policies

The Interceptor is a fully customizable security appliance.   If we can provide the security gateway to the United Nations, imagine what we can do for your small business or healthcare organization?

Spam Mail Policy Options

Your spam mail policy options you can choose what happens with spam. Custom rules can exist for different spam mail policies.

Other options include a "Reject and Delete" threshold. Mails are deleted (reject/delete policy) if the spam score is higher than this value, regardless of the policy setting you entered on the previous page.

Interceptor has Multiple Layers and Filters

Interceptor was designed to utilize multiple layers of protection and redundancy to protect your information.   Although no system is 100% safe due to the fact that the human element can create the most significant liability.  The SafetySend Interceptor is the best security and compliance firewall and malware filter available.

If you would like to know more about the Interceptor technology and how it could reduce costs and improve performance in your organization please provide us your name so one of our account managers may answer your questions.
